What is eventing

Eventing is the all-around equestrian sport. Within this Olympic discipline no less than three parts are performed: a dressage test, a showjumping course and a terrain test, called cross-country. Eventing is a sport full of variety and adventure, often in beautiful landscapes. Of course, the beautiful Kuinderbos is no exception.

The first part of eventing is the dressage test. Here it is about whether the rider and his/her horse ("the combination") can work well together. It is then about whether the refined cooperation in the gaits walk, trot and canter.

This is followed by the jumping course, where combinations can receive penalties for dropping bars, refusals or exceeding the maximum time. It requires precision and agility from both rider and horse to clear all the obstacles without error.

The terrain trial (the cross) is the spectacular highlight of the discipline. During the terrain test, fixed natural obstacles must be overcome: tree trunks, hedges, water jump, up and down jumps and level differences. The combination receives penalty points if the horse refuses to jump an obstacle, if it jumps next to the flag or if a combination completes the course too fast or too slow.

When the cross country has been ridden by everyone in the same class, the final standings can be made up and both the "penalty points" incurred in the dressage, jumping and cross country count. The combination with the lowest number of penalty points is the winner.

Horse Welfare is paramount

The welfare of the horses is paramount in the sport of eventing. Therefore, both after the jumping and after the cross-country, an examination by the veterinarian follows. He checks the horse for condition and health and determines whether the horse is "FIT TO COMPETE". If this is not the case then exclusion always follows.

The most versatile branch of equestrian

To practice the sport of eventing, you have to develop yourself and your horse into a very versatile combination. This also makes the discipline fun, because it brings you into contact with almost all facets of equestrian sports.
